Metabolic Psychiatry: Understanding the Connection Between Metabolism and Mental Health

Mental health is influenced by far more than neurotransmitters alone. Emerging research demonstrates that metabolism, inflammation, nutrition, hormones, sleep, and lifestyle all contribute to how the brain functions. At Sante Health, we use comprehensive metabolic assessment to identify modifiable factors that may support cognitive performance and emotional well-being through collaborative, evidence-based care.

A Note Before You Read Further

The Sante Method’s approach to mental health is informed by principles of metabolic psychiatry, a growing field that examines how metabolism, inflammation, mitochondrial function, sleep physiology, nutrient status, and hormonal health influence brain function, mood, cognition, and emotional regulation.

At Sante Health, metabolic psychiatry is not viewed as an alternative to psychiatry. It is psychiatry approached through a broader biologic lens.

Care may include psychiatric evaluation, medication management when clinically appropriate, metabolic and functional lab interpretation, lifestyle and nutrition strategies that support brain health, and collaboration with existing therapists, psychiatrists, or medical providers when relevant.

This approach does not replace emergency psychiatric services, psychotherapy, or higher levels of psychiatric care when needed.

What Metabolic Psychiatry Actually Is

Metabolic psychiatry is a clinical framework that studies how metabolic health influences brain function, psychiatric symptoms, cognition, and emotional regulation.

The Framework

Research in this field explores how factors such as insulin resistance, chronic inflammation, mitochondrial dysfunction, nutrient deficiencies, sleep disruption, hormonal imbalance, and gut-brain interactions may contribute to mental health symptoms and influence how patients respond to treatment.

Rather than separating mental health from physical health, metabolic psychiatry recognizes that the brain is a metabolically active organ deeply affected by the body’s overall physiology.

At Sante Health, this framework is incorporated into psychiatric care through a comprehensive evaluation of the biologic systems that may influence emotional and cognitive health.

Who Is a Good Candidate

This consultation may be a fit if you are:
• Looking for a more biologically informed psychiatric approach
• Experiencing persistent mood, cognitive, or stress-related symptoms that feel physiologic rather than purely situational
• Interested in understanding how metabolism, inflammation, sleep, hormones, or nutrition may be affecting mental health
• Already working with a psychiatrist or therapist and want metabolic evaluation integrated into your care
• Experiencing treatment-resistant symptoms despite conventional approaches
• Seeking proactive support for long-term cognitive and emotional resilience

This consultation is not a fit for patients seeking crisis services, emergency psychiatric care, or psychotherapy alone. Patients requiring higher levels of psychiatric support should continue care with their psychiatrist, therapist, or emergency mental health services when appropriate.

How The Sante Method Supports Brain Health

Every Sante Health program moves through the same five-stage process, the ADORE Framework, adapted to the clinical question in front of you.
Most metabolic psychiatry care at Sante Health happens through secure HIPAA-compliant telehealth across California. Labs are drawn at a convenient local site.

Assess

Review psychiatric symptoms, cognitive concerns, nutrition, sleep, metabolic health, medications, lifestyle, and comprehensive laboratory testing.

Decode

Interpret metabolic and laboratory findings to identify potentially modifiable contributors such as insulin resistance, thyroid dysfunction, nutritional deficiencies, chronic inflammation, sleep disorders, or hormone imbalance.

Optimize

Develop a personalized plan that may include nutrition, lifestyle medicine, targeted supplementation, hormone optimization when appropriate, exercise, sleep improvement, and coordination with psychiatrists, therapists, and primary care physicians.

Refine

Monitor symptom changes, laboratory markers, treatment response, and functional improvement while adjusting recommendations over time.

Empower

Help patients understand the relationship between metabolic health and brain health while providing practical tools to support long-term cognitive and emotional wellness.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this psychiatric treatment?

Yes. Metabolic psychiatry at Sante Health is part of psychiatric care delivered through a biologically informed framework that evaluates how metabolic health may influence mood, cognition, stress resilience, and psychiatric symptoms.
Depending on the patient’s needs, care may include psychiatric evaluation, medication management, metabolic assessment, functional lab interpretation, and lifestyle interventions that support brain health.

Yes. Many patients already have an established psychiatrist or therapist and want a deeper evaluation of the metabolic and physiologic factors affecting how they feel. With your permission, care can be coordinated collaboratively with your existing providers.

A Comprehensive Metabolic Assessment focuses broadly on metabolism, inflammation, hormones, energy regulation, and longevity-related health optimization.

The Metabolic Psychiatry Consultation specifically focuses on the relationship between metabolism and mental health symptoms, cognition, emotional regulation, stress physiology, and brain function.

On request, the consultation includes evaluation of modifiable metabolic and lifestyle risk factors that research has associated with Alzheimer's-related risk: glycemic regulation, inflammatory markers, sleep architecture, nutrient status, and certain genetic markers (such as APOE status when patients elect to share results), paired with personalized strategies to support those modifiable contributors. This is a risk-factor evaluation, not an Alzheimer's diagnostic, screening, or detection service.

Laboratory evaluation is individualized but may include metabolic markers, inflammatory markers, nutrient status, thyroid function, cortisol patterns, cardiometabolic markers, hormone testing, and additional functional markers depending on the clinical picture. The exact panel is calibrated at intake.

The initial Metabolic Psychiatry Consultation is 90 minutes by telehealth, conducted after labs are completed so the visit can focus on data interpretation and planning. Follow-ups are 45 to 60 minutes.

Sante Health is cash-pay. Superbills can be provided for eligible visits for potential out-of-network reimbursement. This consultation is not billed under psychiatric codes.
